British Masters' Championships

Walsall Campus - University of Wolverhampton

7th July 2024

Massive congratulations to coach Barry Tickell who took a bronze medal today in the British Masters' Championships in Walsall. Held on the same campus as the British Judo Association's National Performance Centre this event is the national championships for judoka over 30. The very best in Britain come to compete, this is where judoka earn the right to represent Britain in international competitions. In his first match Barry fought the eventual winner and British champion. Both got stuck in with strong attacking grips and it looked to spectators like the first one to get a good attack in would probably win. In fact Barry's opponent received a penalty for passivity before producing a beautiful drop seoi-nage that took Barry over for ippon. Now warmed up Barry threw his second opponent for ippon himself with a powerful o-uchi-gari, submitted his third with a strangle and held his fourth down to take the bronze medal. Barry proved he's up there with the very best in Britain in his category - can he go higher next year?

29th June 2024

It was a stunning day out for the team to York on Saturday. Dominik wasn't content with a gold medal in the junior category, he then went and got silver in the senior category too. His dad Darek took bronze (I'm sure Dominik didn't wind him up at all on the drive home). Special mention has to go to Timmy - a gold medal in his first ever competition! Then we had a gold rush! Hanna, Micha, Tom, Korey all took top honours. The seniors weren't far behind. As well as Darek's bronze Ruby and Aaron took silver, and Marc took bronze. That's a big haul of medals! All credit to our amazing players, and of course the coaches who are always happy to just slog their guts out so everyone else can take the credit.
