Masterclass with David Starbrook
23rd March 2024

Over the years there have been many great british Judo players. There have been champions, characters, great technicians and fierce fighters. But on a different level are the players who set the pace, who did something for the first time or changed the direction of british Judo. We were honoured to be visited by one of those rare pioneers on Saturday. David Starbrook won Britain's first olympic Judo medal, in 1972 at the Munich olympics. That medal was silver, and he took bronze four years later in Montreal. He took bronze medals at the world championships in 1971 and 1973 as well. Now with 60 years of Judo experience he still trains and coaches - he's a true legend of british Judo. He delivered a session to a mat packed with club members for two hours and it was a day to be remembered forever for everyone who was there.

Masterclass With Neil Adams
28th June 2025
"Legend" is a word that is used too often in sport. But Neil Adams can't really be described in any other way. Britain's first male world champion, three times olympian (winning silver medals in 1980 and 1984), multiple European champion, awarded an MBE for services to Judo and 9th dan of the International Judo Federation.
He's arguably contributed even more to Judo as a coach than as a competitor. Based on an unmatched knowledge and understanding of the underpinning principles of Judo, for forty years he's innovated and developed techniques at the very forefront of the sport. To have a workshop with Neil is a highlight for any judoka.
But on this particular day he wasn't alone.
Niki Adams was an olympian in 1996, Steve Gawthorpe in 1984. Andy Frudd was a British Open Champion. Friend of Miramar Stan Cantrill continues to compete at an international level, has been a close friend of Neil for more than half a century and is rightfully held up throughout the world as an exemplar of the spirit of Judo.
On this day, we got them all....
Five great champions. Four hours of solid Judo. One legendary day.
